Your gift helps us say YES to pets in need of life-saving care today
33 applications for help in a single day
Last week the VHS’s McVitie team received 33 applications for help in a single day. This is the most applications we have ever received in one day. Each application the VHS receives comes from a loving guardian desperate to save their pet. We want to say yes to every one of them, but the truth is, we simply do not have the funds to be able to.
Tango and Luis’ story
Recently we said yes to helping a sweet dog named Tango. Tango’s surgery cost $3,600, and I am sharing his story in the hope that you can help retroactively cover his care so we can keep saying yes to more animals like him today.
Tango is only three years old and full of life and love. When he was diagnosed with painful kidney stones, his guardian Luis was devastated. Without surgery, Tango’s kidneys could fail.
“The cost of the surgery is somewhat expensive, and it is impossible for me to cover it,” Luis told the VHS team. “When I found out about the McVitie Fund, I did not hesitate for a second to ask for help to give a second chance to my great friend Tango. If I do not cover the cost for Tango to receive the surgery he needs, I will have to make the most difficult decision of my life, which is to put him to sleep.”
“Tango has given me company and emotional support during the most difficult moments. I cannot lose him. Tango has been of great help with my anxiety,” Luis told the VHS team.
For Luis, losing Tango was unthinkable. Tango is family. Luis came to Canada from Mexico, searching for a better life. Far from his family and the home he grew up in, life has been difficult and often very lonely. Every day, Luis works long hours to support his family back in Mexico and to cover his own basic needs here in Canada. Despite working hard, the rising cost of living leaves Luis with very little to spare each month, and his savings were quickly exhausted after paying for Tango’s initial veterinary tests.
The VHS never wants an animal to suffer, so our McVitie team quickly approved Tango’s application so that he was able to receive the urgent surgery he needed. I’m delighted to share that he is recovering well. Tango’s prognosis is very good, and soon he will be able to go back to enjoying the simple joys of life, walks, treats, cuddles, and being the emotional support his guardian so desperately needs.
It is entirely thanks to the generosity of supporters like you that the VHS can continue this vital work to help animals.
Could you spare any amount to retroactively cover the cost of Tango’s care and be the reason other pets like Tango can return home healthy this fall?
Your compassion for animals means so much and this work truly could not happen without you. Thank you for giving if you can, every gift helps save lives.
